Make Spiritual Care Your Getting 2 Great Plan!

Health Management Chaplaincy

Health Management Chaplaincy

The Staff Chaplains and Volunteer Chaplains of Health Management are from many denominations and faiths. They are known in their communities and are trained to serve our HMA patients and staff with Spiritual Care. They do not push their personal faith or try to take the place of a patient’s local minister.  The goal is always to assess and meet a patient’s spiritual preference.  A main ministry is simply being there for people (called the ‘ministry of presence”)

Chaplains assist the medical and hospital staff in many situations by providing:  (From Standards of Practice for Professional Chaplains in Acute Care Setting)

  • Standard 1, Assessment: The chaplain gathers and evaluates relevant data pertinent to the patient’s situation and/or bio-psycho-social-spiritual/religious health.
  • Standard 2, Delivery of Care: The chaplain develops and implements a plan of care to promote patient well-being and continuity of care.
  • Standard 3, Documentation of Care: The chaplain enters information into the patient’s medical record that is relevant to the patient’s medical, psycho-social, and spiritual/religious goals of care.
  • Standard 4, Teamwork and Collaboration: The chaplain collaborates with the organization’s interdisciplinary care team.
  • Standard 5, Ethical Practice: The chaplain adheres to the Common Code of Ethics, which guides decision making and professional behavior.
  • Standard 6, Confidentiality: The chaplain respects the confidentiality of information from all sources, including the patient, medical record, other team members, and family members in accordance with federal and state laws, regulations, and rules.
  • Standard 7, Respect for Diversity: The chaplain models and collaborates with the organization and its interdisciplinary team in respecting and providing culturally competent patient-centered care

Chaplains may also offer these practical services:

  • offer to call the patient’s minister or place of worship
  • work with Case Management in discharge planning
  • pastoral care during the dying process or at death (grief counseling);
  • pastoral crisis intervention (i.e.:  trauma, emergencies or a Code Blue);
  • ministry during Withdrawal of Life Support
  • orchestration and prayer at Hospital functions
  • Funerals and Weddings for patients, employees and their family members

This endeavor to meet patients’ holistic needs will produce better Patient Satisfaction Scores, better medical outcomes and shorter patient hospital stays.  In essence, the positive presence of a staff chaplain can pay its own way, proving to be good for the patient, the hospital, and the staff.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hi, I’m Larry Pope.  It is my honor to serve as the Health Management Home Office Chaplain.

It is my vision to see each of our Health Management hospitals staffed with a Professional Staff Chaplain to consistently serve the spiritual needs of our patients and their families, as well as our staff.  We are also recruiting and training Volunteer Chaplains to minister alongside the Staff Chaplain to meet the needs of each hospital.  I am proud of HMA and it’s leadership that they encourage and support Spiritual Care – Kelly’s Letter on Spiritual Care.  The Joint Commission has also mandated that each hospital do a spiritual assessment on each patient.  With all this backing, the patients and the hospitals will be the recipients of quality health care.

It is my privilege to support you in your ministry. My leadership style is not that of a boss but that of a mentor, coach, confidant, encourager, and friend.

We hope to use the web as a means to learn from each other by pooling our strengths and resources together.

Meet Chaplain Missy Deibler, Health Management Chaplaincy Advisor

David and Missy3 copy

Michelle “Missy” Deibler has been asked to complete the Health Management Chaplaincy team since she is a volunteer chaplain and soon to be a Staff Chaplain.  Since Health Management has several hundred volunteer chaplains, we believe her experience as a volunteer will help us understand that side of ministry.  Furthermore, we need to be aware of the many issues with women in ministry.  From the first email, it was apparent that Missy was the perfect chaplain to help us meet patients spiritual needs.

Missy writes, “My journey towards becoming a chaplain came from a hunger I experienced while my husband battled cancer in 1998. As we faced the fear of the unknown during his month long stay at the hospital, I searched each person’s face that entered the room for any trace of encouragement or hope. Ironically, a chaplain never visited us, but it gave me the incentive to pursue the training that would equip me for the position myself.

In 2005, I became part of the Volunteer Spiritual Care team at the Heart of Lancaster. Since then, I enrolled at Evangelical Theological Seminary in Myerstown, PA where I’m pursing a Master of Arts in Religion. I’ve taken one unit of CPE with the intention of completing the units once I graduate.

My employed position as Volunteer Coordinator allows me to be involved with the daily operations of the hospital, so I am very aware of the. spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of both the staff and the patients. Although I was raised in the Anabaptist tradition, our family presently attends an Evangelical Congregational Church.

My husband, David, and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary in 2011. He  retired from his Chiropractic practice to work for my family’s business. We have four children and four grandchildren. I am inspired and refreshed by the mentorship of the Health Management Chaplaincy leadership and feel blessed to be part of this Christ centered group.

In Colossians 4:6, we are reminded, “let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”

I continue to pray for the wisdom that God promises me as I minister to the sick.”
