Disney Characters Bring Holiday Magic to Kids at Lower Keys
posted on December 22, 2011 at 2:44 pm
When Disney’s Magic Cruise Ship docked in Key West on December 11, some of Disney’s most famous characters left the ship for a very important date onshore. Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Chip and Dale, Goofy and the Disney Cruise Line VoluntEARS made a visit to Lower Keys Medical Center’s lobby to brighten the holidays for 125 special-needs kids and their parents.
The characters were met with smiles, laughter and screams of joy as they visited and posed with each child for a holiday photo. The hospital provided homemade cookies and punch, and local musician Robin Kaplan and 16 local children sang holiday songs to create a festive atmosphere. Each child received a Mickey Mouse Holiday DVD and poster, generously donated by Disney Cruise Lines. Before the event, Disney characters made a special visit to children in the pediatric wing and spread holiday cheer to patients and Associates throughout the hospital.
A heart-warming tradition
“This is a fantastic holiday program that Disney Cruise Line offers at each of their ports of call this time of year,” said Randy Detrick, Marketing at Lower Keys. “Each VoluntEAR from the ship donates their day off to do this for local kids in need.”
This is the sixth year that the marketing team at Lower Keys has partnered with Disney Cruise Line to hold this event. The invite-only event is held for children from Wesley House Family Services, Easter Seals, and Grace Jones Day Care organizations.
“All of us at Disney Cruise Line look forward to this event each year,” said Mark Witko, Disney Cruise Line Community Relations Manager. “Seeing the smiles on these children’s faces is always a highlight of the season and a great way to celebrate the holidays.”
Thanks to Disney Cruise Line and Lower Keys Medical Center, these children have something to smile about this holiday season.
